Latest Updates on MG 5

What's New on MG 5?

Introduction

  • Essentially a rebadged version of the China-spec Roewe i5, the MG 5 is currently in the first facelifted form of the first-generation version, which globally debuted in 2021. While the MG 5 received a second facelift in 2024, the current UAE-spec version of the sedan continues to be in its first facelifted version. Starting at AED 54,536, the MG 5 in the UAE is available in three variants – STD, COM, and DEL, all of which come with a standard petrol-automatic powertrain and four colour options – Black Pearl, Blade Silver, York White, and Flare Red.

Exterior

  • The facelifted version of the MG 5, which was introduced in 2021, made this entry-level sedan from MG a sleeker-looking car than before. The front and rear profiles of the MG 5 were tweaked in the last update, which gave this sedan an upmarket feel on the outside.
  • The front profile of the MG 5 has a sleek-looking grille, with a dark chrome finish in its upper half and a honeycomb mesh pattern in its lower half. This wide trapezoidal grille has wing-shaped sweptback headlamps on its sides, with these headlamp housings getting LED projectors and daytime running LEDs over them. The angular air dams on the sides of the front bumper come with LED fog lamps in their outer lower edges while having gloss black highlights over them.
  • The side profile of the MG 5 also has smooth contours over the front and rear fenders, which are joined by a smooth curve flowing through the door panels. The MG 5 has 16-inch machined alloy wheels in the mid-spec and top-spec variants. At the back, this entry-level MG sedan has sporty-looking combination tail lamps with LED inserts, which have triangular inner edges. These tail lamps are joined by a tin strip of dark chrome across the boot lid’s width.
  • Ride & Handling Key Highlights The MG 5 has a conventional suspension combination of Macpherson struts at the front and a torsion beam at the rear. The overall ride quality is pretty decent, with the soft setup for the suspension giving it a settled low-speed ride. However, the steering responses can be a bit more exciting.

  • Engine & Fuel Consumption Key Highlights All three variants of the MG 5 come standard with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine, which is paired with a CVT. This engine puts up 110 PS of maximum power and 140 Nm of maximum torque, giving the MG 5 a top speed of 184 kmph and a decent fuel efficiency of 15.38 kmpl. While the refinement levels are pretty decent, there is a lack of punch from this engine, especially at higher RPMs. The CVT also feels convenient to use but feels uninspiring during fast overtakes.

Interior

  • The MG 5 comes standard with an all-black theme for the cabin, which has a gloss black-themed middle layer flowing through the dashboard and door panel extensions. There is a grey-coloured fine-textured layer across the dashboard’s width, which adds some freshness to the rather simple-looking cabin.
  • The MG 5 has a modern-looking 12.3-inch coloured TFT instrument console behind the three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel, while also having a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is slightly tilted towards the driver’s side. Both these screens have vibrant display modes and graphics, which add much-needed vibrance to the cabin.
  • The MG 5 has premium features like an electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, a single-pane sunroof, a wireless charger, a 6-speaker audio system, automatic climate control with rear AC vents and leather upholstery for the seats. Despite its compact dimensions, the MG 5 impresses with its roomy cabin, which has ample space for five passengers. However, the boot space of 406 litres feels small by sedan standards.

  • Braking & Safety Key Highlights Being an entry-level offering, the MG 5 misses out on the more sophisticated ADAS features. However, this sedan covers the basics like front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic parking brake with auto hold function, heated rearview mirrors and rear windscreen, reverse parking sensors and 360-degree parking camera.

  • Verdict Key Highlights With a starting price of AED 54,536, the MG 5 undercuts even some smaller and less powerful entry-level hatchbacks, which makes this entry-level sedan from MG a terrific value-for-money proposition.
